When you think of authors, you usually think of books. The word "book" has two definitions. A book in the traditional sense is something you read. It consists of words printed on paper in a hardcover or paperback or now on the computer. A book is also a "generally accepted way of doing things." Since at least 97% of all books get rejected by traditional publishers, your chances of getting published are slim. And if you are lucky enough to get published, your publisher will give you an advance and if you sell enough copies of your book, you'll get paid royalties. The average advance is about $1,500. Since most books don't sell enough to pay out royalties, you probably won't make much. Then after you give your agent their cut and calculate all your other expenses, you'll be left with very little, if any, money. This is not a way to live. For a long time it was the only game in town. If you've gone this route, then you've probably had the "book" thrown at you.
